Hałda

HAŁDA is a multimedia installation exploring the environmental and cultural consequences of extractive industries, with a particular focus on the post-mining landscape of Bukowno in southern Poland.
The project takes the spoil heap as both a physical structure and a metaphor for accumulation — of industrial waste, environmental damage, collective memory, and the consequences of human intervention in the landscape. What remains after extraction is not an empty territory, but a constantly transforming environment in which geological processes, industrial history, and new forms of life intersect. The installation combines video documentation of a post-industrial landscape, three-dimensional sculptural forms resembling miniature spoil heaps, and three fluorescent tubes carrying the phrase “How do we sleep while our beds are burning”, referencing the song by Midnight Oil. The repeated question introduces a sense of urgency, confronting the viewer with the tension between environmental awareness and collective passivity.
The sculptural elements translate the monumental scale of the post-mining landscape into intimate, almost geological specimens. Together with the moving image and artificial light, they create a fragmented portrait of a territory shaped by extraction, abandonment, and ongoing ecological transformation. HAŁDA reflects on the Anthropocene, the persistence of industrial traces, and the difficulty of confronting environmental crises that remain visible yet are often normalised as part of everyday life.
